eSports finally comes to Sky TV

Sky TV has aired competitive eSports on UK TV for the first time in the sports history.

Highlights from the ESL Intel Masters World Championships aired on Monday 7th March.

The coverage included highlights from the Counter-Strike, League Of Legends, Starcraft II and Global Offensive tournaments that were held over the weekend in Katowice, Poland.

The programme in question aired, not on one of Sky’s eight dedicated sports channels, but on Sky 2.

As a Sky TV representative told engadget.com, the decision to air the footage “doesn’t signal a huge commitment to eSports coverage.

Footage from the 2015 League of Legends World Championships was screened last autumn on the BBC via its online channel.

But while the seal might have been broken, the future of eSports as a UK TV phenomenon remains uncertain.
