IGT’s history

IGT first tasted real success in the late 1970s, when its video poker machines became hugely popular in the US. IGT were one of the first companies to add computer technology to slots machines. In the late 1980s IGT introduced a slots machine called the ‘Nevada Megabucks’. This was the first-ever progressive jackpot slots. Nevada Megabucks Machines were linked, and players contributed to the base jackpot of $1million. In 1989, a 76-year-old man, Elmer Sherwin, won the Megabucks jackpot of $4.6 million at the Cannery Casino, Las Vegas. Amazingly, sixteen years later he won it again – this time winning $21 million.

IGT made a move into the burgeoning online casino market in 2005 by buying WagerWorks, one of the largest casino software specialists in the world. By 2010 IGT had won over 50 awards given out by various industry bodies.

In July 2014 it was announced that the Italian technology and lottery provider GTECH has agreed a deal to purchase IGT. The price offered was thought to be somewhere in the region of $6.4 billion. The new company would be based in the UK with operating headquarters in Las Vegas, Rhode Island and Rome. Surprisingly, the IGT name is to be dropped in favour of GTECH branding.

IGT casino games

IGT is responsible for a vintage slots catalogue that is insanely popular amongst fans. Noteworthy IGT slots include Cleopatra, Deal or No Deal, Rainbow Riches and Da Vinci Diamonds. The company has also made many slots with franchise tie-ins. These include Star Trek, Transformers and War of the Worlds.

The company also makes casino table games software, with a focus on blackjack, baccarat and roulette.

Thanks to a $500 million February 2012 purchase of the social games company DoubleDown, IGT offers a decent array of social gaming apps. These apps include bingo and poker, and modified versions of respected slots titles, such as Dungeons & Dragons, Kitty Glitter, Miss Red and Wolf Run.
